Wake County Schools is gearing up for a critical summit on school safety, with a focus on implementing new protocols and strategies to ensure the well-being of students and staff. This initiative comes in the wake of a survey revealing that while most students feel safe, there are areas for improvement, particularly in bathroom safety and visitor management.
The summit, scheduled for Tuesday morning at Millbrook High School, will bring together school resource officers (SROs) and school leaders to review and practice these new safety measures. One of the key topics will be the district's new standard response protocol during emergencies, which aims to standardize communication between law enforcement and school staff. This protocol includes action steps like 'hold', 'secure', 'lockdown', 'evacuate', and 'shelter', providing a clear and consistent approach to handling various crisis scenarios.
The survey, conducted among high school students, revealed interesting insights. While a significant majority (82%) feel generally safe at school, students identified several areas for improvement. The top concerns include staff monitoring of hallways and shared spaces, ensuring external and classroom doors are locked, and enhancing safety in bathrooms. Interestingly, a notable 46% of students cited bathrooms as areas that need the most attention, with only 16% voting for outside school grounds and the cafeteria as the second-most critical areas.
One measure that gained popularity among students is the implementation of artificial intelligence-powered weapons detectors at secondary school entryways. However, the district has yet to adopt this idea, with only 23% of students expressing support for it. This is particularly relevant given the recent incidents of students bringing weapons on campus, including a tragic stabbing in the cafeteria in 2023.
The survey, the first of its kind, was conducted during the winter and received responses from nearly 23,000 high school students. It highlights the importance of student feedback in shaping school safety policies. As the school year begins, district leaders plan to further engage with students and teachers to ensure that these new safety measures are effective and responsive to the needs of the student body.
